Backstory:

Jasper’s father is a Bander Wolf breeder and tamer. His mother, who is much older than his Father, is a retired teacher of perceptive magic. Both are part of Brunnhold’s extended family, and they have always lived close to the university.

Jasper’s older brother, Oscar, chose to work with his father rather than attend the school. His mother was so disappointed by this decision that she began teaching Jasper about magic from a very young age, fearing that he would grow up as indifferent to the subject as his brother. Sure enough, Jasper lived up to his mother’s expectations – not through any real love of his studies, but for the attentions of his teacher. By feigning a wide-eyed fascination and devotion to the subject, he found she would favour him over his brother. Jasper began to share his mother’s somewhat malformed view that Oscar was unmotivated and slow, and that he himself is ambitious and capable of greatness.

He has lived a very sheltered life. Almost everybody he knows works for, or is a pupil at the Brunnhold University.

Personality:

Jasper is an astute student, focusing on the art of perceptive magic. He works hard and generally gets on well with his teachers. He is quite the typical teenage boy – more than a little arrogant, still awkward around pretty girls. His friends find him agreeable and a good sport - but he does not stand out from the crowd. Except…

He talks to his pet Bander wolf, Oddy. Not in front of people, of course. But if you were to stumble across him doing so, you may notice he speaks to it in a manner that you’ve never heard him speak in before. And when he looks at it, he looks different somehow, like when an object looks entirely changed under certain lighting. It’s an on/off apparition – dispelled as soon as he catches you watching, but it’s moments such as those that you get the impression he is a typical teenage boy only because it’s what he’s expected to be, what he’s only ever known to be, like a role, a mould into which the wrong material has been poured.

Jasper is very ignorant of what is going on in the world outside of the university. He does not even hold much of an opinion of the other races. Humans and wicks are distant, like characters in a play that he hasn’t got around to seeing yet. His world is tragically small. His only hope is that something, or someone, will come along soon to bust it open.

Appearance:

Jasper is achingly ordinary looking. His face is symmetrical, his skin unblemished. He has very short, brown hair and brown almond eyes, a long, straight nose and high cheekbones. His teeth are neat and clean, his fingers are long and elegant and his body is well toned and well nourished. He is, to his utmost dismay, perfectly forgettable. He is attractive – but in a bland and uninspiring way. He is envious of wicks, on a superficial level, because of their colourful and flamboyant appearance.

Inventory:

He does not carry much, as the University provides everything he needs. He owns a small, runt Bander wolf – grey striped and blue eyed – named Oddy.

Occupation:

Student of Brunnhold University, specialising in perceptive magic.

Goals:

To do well in his studies. Perhaps to become an apprentice of one of his teachers. Whatever will please his Mother and allow him to carry on living his comfortable, uncomplicated life. Let's hope he fails!
