Karana Lutker
Main article: Yellow Pages
Name: Karana Lutker
Age: 13 (officially 11)
Race: galdor
Place of Origin: Gior
Backstory:
Karana's parents were, originally, fairly well respected quantifiers. They worked together, analyzing backlash, quantifying the levels of spells, and other matters they would be happy to explain if the jargon involved did not make Karana's ears bleed. The birth of not simply one, but two passives between them left that respect heavily tarnished, even in Gior. After Ardan's failed initiation, they were shocked, but took their crippled child back home with them, though they moved soon after.
When Karana's other brother came along, they knew there was little chance of history repeating. After all, passives are one in a hundred. The intellectual knowledge had less sway than their fears, though. As he grew older, they worked the complicated spells that would give them hints as to his abilities. The results weren't encouraging. In Zachariah's ninth year, they moved again. In their new, more reclusive home, they pretended to those who visited that he was seven. Karana was demoted to four. It didn't, couldn't last terribly long, only until Zachariah's beard began to grow, but they could pretend to themselves they didn't 'know' they were right. Ardan's atypical presence in his brother's life was simply... he wasn't at school. The spare room he kept, simply a fondness for his kin. It wasn't as if they were Anaxi. It was a matter of sidelong looks and uncomfortable silences, until it became too obvious to ignore.
Zach eventually eased into living full time with his brother, and the Lutkers' neighbors whispered about a couple so misfortunate as to have two in the family. Had they done something? Was one of the spells they had written so dangerous? Karana's status would have been another source of conversation, but she had a field they could sense, having been tutored privately. It wasn't nearly what a good school would do, but it was enough to keep her from questioning their family situation.
With the news all but out, though, there was no reason to hold her any further back, and they made the appropriate arrangements and saw her onto an aeroship for Brunnhold, with enough money for an emergency, a few study grimoires, and one, locked, book just in case. They didn't expect the pirates to attack that ship, crashing it far from civilization. The pirates didn't expect several of the galdori passengers to be vacationing military, sending the other ship just as surely onto the rocks. They even gave her a (small) share of what they took from the wreck before they began heading back to Gior. She wasn't sure if it were more that they thought she was a cute little girl, or that she'd helped patch the exhausted men and women.
At any rate, it ended up taking months longer to get to Anaxas than she had expected.
Personality:
Karana is rather friendly, willing to listen to others chatter about their lives, play Backlash or Piiki Piiki, or simply talk about life, the universe, and how teacher x needs to lighten up.
She hasn't spent much time in populous places, she greets the city with the delight of an explorer. There is so much to see! So many things to do! So many new treats to taste!
Physical Description:
Karana is fairly typical for the albino-prone Gioran, or will be when she's recovered. Her white hair falls to her waist, confined only by a widebrimmed hat.
Sunburn seems to have found her company delightful, much of her skin is reddened and sore. There are more stains, patched tears, and sun-bleaching on her clothes than most galdori would be willing to be seen in, though her blue tinted glasses seem unscratched.
She hasn't blossomed yet, there is still the rounding of childhood around her angular bones. Her figure is still thin and flat. At least there are no wrinkles around her pinkish eyes.
