Margarisse Lourette

Main article: Yellow Pages

Name: Margarisse Lourette
Age: 16
Race: passive
Place of Origin: Dorhaven

Backstory:

The Lourette family was quite wealthy and quite powerful. They were a proud family, with a rich heritage and a noble linneage. That's why, when their youngest child Margarisse failed her magic test at the age of 10, no words were said on the ride home, nor were any words said when her mother had the passive servants dress the girl in her finest dress. It wasn't until Margarisse's mother had taken her daughter's face in her hands that she began to speak, not the comforting words of one calming a child's fears, but the monite for The Touch of Naulas. Halfway through the spell, Margarisse's father burst into the room, disrupting his wife's casting and saving his daughter's life with a healing spell. While the girl survived, the spell had been strong enough to damage Margarisse's hearing and vocal chords to the point of being permanantly deaf and dumb. Margarisse was whisked away from the room, and later her home. She was delivered to Brunhold under the name Maggie Lours and sold into slavery. It was a few years later that the rumors trickled down to Margarisse; her mother had died from severe backlash the same night she had tried to kill her own daughter.

Margarisse grew up in Brunhold, knowing nothing of outside life as a galdor except that which she saw in the lives of the students at the school. While she missed the attention lavished on her as a child, she could honestly say she was glad she hadn't turned out like any of the snobbish, mean and hurtful galdori that passed through the halls day after day. One night, after most students had retired for the evening, a male student stumbled in highly intoxicated from a trip to the Stacks. He spotted Margarisse mopping the floor ahead of him. The unthinkable happened. Margarisse didn't hear him behind her, and once she knew what was happeneing it was too late to fight back. With no voice to cry out, the girl had no choice but to let him have his way. Three months later found her pregnant and scared. She did everything she could to hide her growing child, but was eventually discovered by Professor Harper Moore who, together with Professor Devlin, successfully petitioned the new headmistress to let them hire the girl to assist in their research on passive genetics.

Personality:

Margarisse, despite her lot in life, is a generally cheerful person. She is quiet not by choice, but most likely would be even if she could speak. She no longer feels the sting of mistreatment from the galdori around her thanks to the efforts made by Profs. Moore and Devlin, and carries herself with as much grace as she considers allowed of herself. In more recent times, she has come to care more for the tiny life growing inside her than her own.

Description:

Margarisse's burgandy hair is cropped short, as is the tradition for passive servants at Brunhold. Her light teal-blue eyes are often smiling, even when she's working. Some time has passed since her 'encounter' in the hallway; she is now almost eight months pregnant, and it's most evident on her slight frame. Years of hard work have build muscles most galdori men didn't have, but her body is still tiny in form. She stands at 5'4" if she draws herself to her full height, but usually she appears an inch shorter.

  • A silver heart-shaped locket given to her by her father before taking her magic test, kept hidden under her uniform for many years.

Goals

In the last eight months, Margarisse's goals have shifted considerably. Whereas before she wanted to stay unseen by the students as a way to prevent physical harm to herself, she now wishes to remain unseen to protect her baby. While the child is a product of an unwanted encounter with a stranger, Margarisse holds no anger towards it. She merely wishes her baby to be strong, healthy...and galdori.
