Tomas Baudin

Name: Tomas Baudin (usually called Toma, Tommy)
Age: 30
Gender: Male
Race: Wick
Place of Origin: Nomadic - Lost Moon tribe
Occupation: Apothecary

Bio:   Tomas, known mostly as Toma, spent most of his life travelling with the Lost Moon tribe.  His mother had him fairly late in life, and died when he was just 6 years old.  His father, Eloi, became very closed-off after his wife’s death, withdrawing into his work.  Although the loss of his mother was a blow, it made Toma more determined to keep his father close.  Much of his childhood was spent watching his father work, trying to draw him into conversation.  Gradually, he was able to forge a relationship with his father, but it was always one of quiet understanding.
With his mother gone and his father working, Toma soon found himself pushed into learning a craft.  He studied under his father, at first just observing, but eventually learning enough to help to work leather into bridles and clothing for the tribe.  Although he showed promise, it was never his passion.  He continued to work under his father for a few years until his true calling appeared to him, although it was under less-than-ideal circumstances.
When he was 14, he was out riding when something spooked his horse.  Caught off guard, for he had been joking around with the other boys he was riding with, he was thrown from his horse before he realized what was happening.  Although being thrown is not an unusual occurrence per se, Toma had the misfortune of landing on a rather jagged rock.  Thankfully, they were not far from where their tribe was camped, and so they got him to the healer before he could lose too much blood.  The wound was on the left side of his torso, and fairly deep.  The healer patched him up quite well, but Toma had difficulty heeding her advice about not moving around too much, and as such ended up back to see her quite often.  Over the course of his recovery, he found himself more and more interested in the various remedies and poultices that were being administered to him.  By the time his wound had healed over into an ugly scar, he had convinced to healer to let him apprentice under her.
After spending a number of years learning the uses and effects of various plants and substances, Toma decided it was time to make his own way.  Leaving his father was a difficult decision, despite his father’s insistence that it was necessary.  In the end, it was only with the promise that his father would be looked after by the healer who had taught him so much that Toma felt he was able to leave the tribe that had been his home.  He was given a horse, though not the one that had thrown him all those years ago, and the next time the tribe visited the plains to trade horses and other goods, he set out on his own.
He eventually made his way to Vienda, where he found work as an apothecary.  He obtained a writ of residence, and spent a few years living and working out of a boarding house in the Dives.  He sought news from his tribe whenever possible from passing traders, though he never made the journey back himself, feeling he was of more use working in the city than at home.  He nearly wavered in his decision twice, after learning of the deaths of first his mentor, and then later his father.  It was his father's death that hit him the hardest, but it was also that which convinced him that there was nothing for him with the Lost Moon tribe any longer.  Still, something of his nomadic upbringing lingered, waiting for an opportunity to present itself, which it did mere weeks after he’d learned of his father’s death.  When his neighbour Arion, a good friend and frequent patient of his, came to his rooms one night to say he was fleeing to Mugroba, Toma packed his things and followed him without a second thought. They wound up in Thul Ka, where he and Arion assumed the guise of brotherhood, Toma having loaned out his name when his friend required a new identity. They set up shop together, running the Seeking Moon Apothecary in what has become the Anaxi district of the city.

Personality:   Toma has a hard time taking advice, and thinks a bit too much of his own opinions.  He dislikes violence on principle, and will always try to talk his way out of a situation.  While he used to have a bit of a temper, age has made him far less quick to anger, and his healer's demeanor allows him to maintain a level head in most situations.  He cares deeply about people, more than he cares about himself.  He will trip over himself to ensure that those around him are happy, though he is getting better at thinking before he speaks or acts.  He is fond of a good joke, but hates to offend, and is prone to going overboard trying to apologize if he slips up.  He has a soft spot for hopeless cases, always wanting to help even when help isn’t necessarily wanted.  His knowledge of healing and his desire to be of use to people have tempered the careless boy he once was, but much of that light-hearted demeanor still remains.

Current Goals:  With no family left save the friend masquerading as his brother, Toma is determined to surround himself with loved ones and create a family of his own, romantic or otherwise.  He hopes that this will settle him enough that he will lose what remains of his wanderlust.

Physical:   Toma looks remarkably like his father.  He is of average height and build, handsome enough in his own way but unlikely to stand out from the crowd by physical appearance alone.  His skin is browned by the sun, his hands worn and rough from use, but steady and sure.  His hazel eyes are warm and bright, and his reassuring gaze (and his charm) have won over more than one reluctant patient.  He dresses mostly for comfort, shedding the layered clothing he was so fond of in favour of loose, open shirts in varying shades of green or yellow.  His red hair has a few discrete streaks of green, and he keeps it about shoulder-length, just long enough to by tied back with a strip of cloth.  His right ear is pierced several times, the most prominent being an intricately patterned piece of leather in the shape of a leaf dangling from a delicate metal hoop, which had been a gift from his father.  He inherited a variety of bangles and jewelry from his mother, which he wears on occasion.  His favourite is a small metal pendant in the shape of a horse, which his father had given his mother and which reminds him of his childhood, and he wears it whenever possible.  His only tattoo is a pattern of swirling vines covering much of the left side of his chest and torso, not-quite hiding the jagged scar there.
Other Notes:
Likes: Fog, the smell of crushed greenery, and the feel of leather.
Dislikes: Cold rain, sudden rocks, and prolonged solitude.
