Suhayl Ch’au Itri

edited August 2014 in Character Sheets
Name: Suhayl Ch’au Itri
Age: 25 (b. Vortas 30, 2692)
Race: wick (Bethaj)
Gender: male
Place of Origin: Somewhere at sea (on a boat), Mugroba
Occupation: Aspiring Airship Pirate; courier/fence/fast talker

Bio:
Suhayl was born into a large family to his father’s second, younger wife. He was raised among a myriad of other children, both siblings and cousins, all of them together on one large boat. His father kept meticulous records of their family’s achievements and lineage; their family name was a strong one. Ocean-faring Bethaj, the Ch’au Itri family and their various relatives made their living as both pirates and escorts, depending on what was paying better. Or both … since that always paid more. A large family meant quite a bit of competition, and in order for Suhayl to be noticed and admired, he had to fight very hard to find a skill he excelled at above all else.

While the young wick would have preferred some physical attribute to have been superior, like hand to hand combat (he can hold his own in a fight) or swimming (he did learn to swim in the ocean) or magical prowess (he's not too bad, but tends to favor persuasive, sneaky sort of spellcasting) or even sailing (he’s never been completely lost), his real talent has, fortunately or not, always been his way with words. A smooth talker, Suhayl could charm the pants off an Anaxi or the turban off a Thul’Amat amati. He could talk his way out of a fist fight or gab his way into a free meal. He could also inspire people, organize them, and keep a level head in difficult situations. The problem was, his skills were hardly noteworthy. No one cared that he spoke well. No one cared that he could blend into a crowd or talk his way out of trouble with a smile.

This was discouraging, and drove Suhayl to attempt to do better at so many things, though he always seemed to fall short of this family member or that one. While he was neither the oldest nor the most important of his siblings and cousins, he still felt the responsibility to keep his father’s records strong and full of bragging rights.

His family name was not, however, strong enough to defeat the plague.

While they mostly kept out of the rivers and cities, a few of their extended family members were the ones responsible for fencing their stolen goods and distributing their blood-won wealth. All it took was for a handful of them to fall ill and the plague spread like wildfire through their clan.

Suhayl was one of the few left unscathed, but his family was shattered and many of them drifted apart for safety. He commandeered his own personal-sized vessel and took to being a courier, his easy words often winning him customers and transport jobs he wouldn’t normally have ever been considered for. It also eventually found him illegal work, too, more profitable work fencing dangerous or expensive goods for others at a price more agreeable to his pockets.

For once, he began to feel comfortable in his own skin, like he belonged, though it was strange to feel like he had a purpose more alone than surrounded by relatives. And yet, he still longed to belong to something greater than himself. As the plague wore on and the piracy and looting grew to epic proportions, Suhayl found himself looking to turn to piracy. His careful conversation found him a crewmember on an amazing airship, a custom-built contraption that gave the AAF a run for their money once they came to put a stop to the plague-induced boom in piracy. Suhayl loved boats. He loved the sea. But he came to realize he loved the air and airships more.

Unfortunately, his was one of many airships shot down and defeated. Somehow, he managed to escape the wreckage unscathed and talk his way out of arrest. Yep, it was just a good day.

Now, a handful of years later and the wick still dreams of owning his own airship and showing Mugroba what real piracy is all about. Fencing affords him a bit of luxury, and he can’t complain, especially now that there’s Anaxi problems to distract from his sort of work. In Thul’Ka proper he’s hoping to find the right crew, and, eventually, to talk himself into or blatantly steal that perfect airship for his lofty goals.

Personality:Suhayl needs to be in the middle of things: the center of attention, the middle of a barfight, the buzz of a crowd, the tense action of a crime. He has to be doing, moving, talking, active. He’s a big thought, big picture, long game sort of thinker, but he’s sometimes crippled by his own impulsive need to do, though his way with words has so far kept him out of too many consequences. Growing up among thieves and pirates and questionable morals has left the wick with a very, very loose interpretation of both personal space and personal property. Both of these things have occasionally landed him on the wrong end of a fight, and he hasn’t always been able to talk his way out of things.

Despite this, he’s not cruel. After the plague, Suhayl has come to believe that life is pretty precious. He lost a lot of family to illness, a lot of friends to fighting, and while he strongly believes that wealth is poorly distributed in the proper channels and it’s his calling to help straighten that out, he doesn’t want to do so in ways that are inherently destructive. He’s not above bloodshed, but he’d prefer to find alternative solutions whenever possible. Especially when there’s profit involved.

Because of his cultural upbringing as an isolated, traditional Bethaj, Suhayl requires achievement of some kind, and thrives on recognition as well as competition. This comes across as a very slick form of vanity, usually, given he has a smooth tongue and a wry sense of humor, but it can also just be blunt conceit. His need to do and be noticed is not always conducive to the life of a fence, and so much of his legal surface activities tend to be as noticeable as possible. He likes to do things with flair, so to speak, regardless of the risk it may be to his illegal activities. Walking that line is part of who he is.

Goals:Keep steady work as a fence/courier. Gather a crew. Steal an airship. Raise airship piracy to a glorious, lucrative, and somewhat attractive level of greatness.

Physical:Suhayl is below average height for a wick, broad shouldered and well-muscled: built more like a swimmer and less like a warrior, however. His skin is very dark and his eyes are light, almost crystalline blue. His smile is broad and he has a pretty decent face, though he tends to think it’s his voice that makes him the most attractive: all ready for radio, if there only was such a thing. The whole left side of his body, from foot to shoulder and down to his wrist, is covered in dark intricate swirling tattoos like waves of the ocean or angry torrents of wind. His ears are pierced a few times, as is his right nostril. He keeps his hair shaved completely, though he'll occasionally protect his head from the heat with a wrap of some kind.

He prefers very loose, easily shed clothing (for ease of swimming, of course): a pair of loose harem pants, a hooded linen vest worn usually open, and simple rope sandals. A few belts hold a variety of knives and pouches, and a pair of nice leather bracers hide a few other sharp objects. His goggles are amber-tinted, and he has a collection of various necklaces. Other than that, he loves his little painted boat that serves as both his home and his business, even though he dreams of bigger, flying machines.

Other notes:None at the moment.
