Lidya Keziah

Name: Lidya Keziah
Age: 28
Race: Imbali
Gender: Female
Place of Origin: The Turtle, Thul Ka, Mugroba
Occupation: Seller of Lies, Scandalous Novelist

Bio: She was born Lidya Olumide into a traditionalist Imbali family of wealthy vanilla merchants (who settled in The Turtle in her great-grandfather’s generation after coming from the Muluku Islands). The only child of her father, who was himself one of six, and mother, one of four, Lidya was doted on and spoiled for much of her childhood. She almost always got her way, and the attitude that came with that treatment carried into her late teens. When the family disapproved of her boyfriend, Naod Keziah, and attempted to arrange a more appropriate marriage to an up-and-coming coffee merchant from the islands, she moved out of her family’s home and into his flat in a fit of rebellion.

There, on the Way of the Book, she met many friends and found her calling as a writer. She was no great writer, but she found decent enough coin in translating her and her boyfriend’s romantic exploits into spicy novels and paperbacks, published under her pen-name “Mare Chandat” (“My Honey”, “Fierce/Hot/Passionate”). Despite their passions-- or perhaps because of them-- they had rocky stops and starts to their relationship (as fights often arose with the difference between her upbringing & attitude and their less affluent lifestyle) before they were finally married when she was 26.

Now in her late 20’s, married to that teen flame, with a rugrat of her own (daughter Wubay, 12 months), Lidya is far from the spoiled little girl she once was. She’s found a place and a peace with her life, and seeks stability for her little one. She allows the occasional visit from her family, but has come to appreciate the value of work, not getting everything you ask for, and a simple lifestyle, and therefore refuses to have any of the spoiling that happened to her going on with her child.

Her husband Naod works for a printer, an income supplemented by her day job as a seller of lies in the Liar’s Market, which supplies her with plenty enough ideas for her night work as a paperback writer, another source of income.

Personality: Lidya, though no longer spoiled, is still strong-willed and can butt heads with the best of them. She’s certain she would die if her daughter ever discovered what she does on the side, and is eternally thankful that she took a pen name at the beginning of her career (a move she thought mysterious and alluring at the time, but now finds a safe place to hide)-- but the boost to their income is really too tempting to stop.

Lidya occasionally worries about whether their daughter or any future children will turn out to be oshoor, but assumes they will handle this when the time arises. However, she and Naod still disagree over how they will do so, with Naod insisting that they ignore it and raise her as Imbali anyway, and Lidya insisting that they will find her a tutor, someone to help her understand what is going on and to gain enough control not to be dangerous. She refuses to allow any child of hers to be outcast-- though they will have to put up some effort of their own.

Lidya has a weakness for strong flavors and good food. Even more so for good sweets (a leftover from her childhood that she just can't shake). Even when times are tight, she has a hard time not spending the odd fort on a piece of chocolate or sweetie. Similarly, she has a weakness for the written word, and almost can't help herself when a title catches her eye on her way home from the Liar's Market-- the pull is even stronger when she's done well for the day. Their flat is littered with books she has read thrice-over, and she can't bear to part with them. In-between clients at the market, if she isn't jotting notes for her next volume she finds herself nosing into another book-- though, with Wubay getting older, she's just as apt to be seen with a picture book these days.

As a Traditionalist Imbali, Lidya feels sorry for the post-exiles and wishes there were something to be done to give them a grounding, like she grew up with and hopes to give her child. She’s even considered adopting post-exile passive children, but has yet to discuss this with her family

Goals: To take care of their family, stability. To keep her secret identity a secret. . To have all the books in the world, and a library to keep them in-- without spending her family's meager savings, of course. Possibly, someday, to adopt and give a home to a post-exile imbali child.

Physical: Lidya likes to describe herself as “a cinnamon chocolate: small, dark, luscious, and full of spice!” She is a little short for an Imbali, but not excessively so, and her motherly plumpness gives her hips that go for miles and a comforting roundness. Her skin is very dark, making her pale hair and yellow-brown eyes stand out. She is almost never seen without two things: her little girl on her hip in a sling, and her bag of writing supplies.
