Post Is This a Date? - Clock's Eve side thread (Triar)
Having said a grateful goodnight to Annie (and returned the camera), Emme spent a fruitless half-hour wandering through the Caoja, looking for Triar.

Her mind raced as she looked for the dark, mysterious man. Why had he asked her? Was this a "date"? Or had she totally misread the situation? Was he really waiting for her? She patted her hair, wondering if it still looked nice. Her beautiful dress' hem was becoming dusty from walking on the cobbles, brushing up against her townspeople, some of whom stared oddly at her, wondering why she was so overdressed.

Finally, she came to the edge of Crosstown Court. There were only a few carts here, mostly abandoned and closed up for the night. Sitting down on a nearby hay bale, she rested her chin in her hands. He wasn't coming. She was foolish to believe he would. And her hair was beginning to come unraveled from the tight bun Hania had constructed; a long tendril snaked down past her face. She blew air out of the side of her mouth, watching it jump up in the updraft.

Perhaps it was for the best, she thought. After all, she shouldn't be eager to get mixed up with another human freedom fighter...

Emme had been quietly wandering around the Caoja, and as was his duty, Triar had been keeping an eye on her the whole time.

He'd really noticed her after she'd entered, but stayed out of sight for a little while. Honestly, he was just making sure that no one, save himself, was shadowing her, and making sure that more or less everything was secure.

She seemed to be getting a little nervous though. He'd told her that he'd show, and Triar Vahl wasn't one to break his promise, any of his promises.

Almost as if he'd been born of it, he slunk out of the shadows, his stride very smooth, doing something he was used to, and then turning slightly awkward as he approached Emme. She looked very nervous while keeping an eye out for him. What was she thinking about? Was she worried about someone stalking her? Was she thinking about him, and if so, what?

Trying to put all of these questions out of his mind, Vahl breathed deeply, and let out a sigh.

"Hey there." He said, trying to start slowly so she wasn't startled by the man who randomly appeared from the darkness, "Sorry I kept you waiting. Was the ball any fun?"

Emme jumped as Triar approached. "Oh, goodness, you gave me a fright," she said, clutching her chest and laughing a bit. She had a relatively deep laugh for someone with such a small voice. Remembering her manners, she stood and bowed a little. "Good evening."

"It's no trouble," she said, feeling extremely nervous in the man's presence. She discreetly brushed some hay from her backside - damn hay bales. "And...not really. I nearly got myself gutted by some golly with a chip on her shoulder."

Triar's, now signature, eyebrows lowered a bit.

"I'm hoping that's not in the literal sense." He said, with an edge to his voice that sounded very protective. She got the feeling that if someone actually tried anything while he was around, that they would be quite sorry.

He extended his hand a bit, face resuming a smile, "Want to walk while we chat? I'm sure there's something interesting enough to see while this party's still under way."

Walking and talking - her favorite thing to do. She hated sitting in one place.

She wasn't sure if she was meant to take his hand or not; she started to, and then, panicking, turned it into more of a gesture. "Sure," she said, her voice cracking ever so slightly. Smooth, Emme.

As they began walking, she looked him over. He was most definitely a resistance fighter. His stance, the way he walked, even his voice...she had known a few of them through Willy, and they all had this sort of invisible mark on them. A weight on their shoulders, a certain darkness under their eyes.

The thought of Willy made her insides turn leaden with guilt. Not even a week after he's dead and you're off with some other man...in a totally platonic capacity, she angrily reminded herself.

"Nice night," she offered, trying to stop thinking about such negative things.

Vahl sighed, staring forward as he listened to her, and then up to the stars. "Yeah," he muttered, "It is a nice night.."

He glanced over to the girl, and shook his head. He really couldn't play this game anymore. It was far too taxing, and he would be due back relatively soon.

"...Emme. I have something I have to admit to you." He paused for a moment, giving the smaller human being time to mentally prepare herself for a big statement. People usually needed those few seconds, and Triar didn't want her running and screaming off into the crowd.

"...There are people who are very worried that someone might come after you next. I think you know who." He spoke, his voice low enough for her to hear, but not for many of the passers by. "I'm supposed to take you somewhere tonight, somewhere that you're going to be safe... Somewhere that you're going to be protected..."

He turned to her, and put eyes on her that spoke volumes, volumes of loss, sadness, determination, and an unwavering will to protect, "...Will you come with me?"

Wide-eyed, Emme let her jaw drop slightly as she stared at Triar.

"Me?" she said, her voice ringing with disbelief. "Why would anyone come after me? Was it the things I said, about Willy, in the paper?" She stopped walking and wrung her hands, more hair coming loose from her bun in her frazzled state. "Is this why you asked me here?"

Triar watched her face fall, and somewhere within him he honestly felt his heart crack a little as he saw the fear and confusion in her eyes.

Quote:

Very slowly, Vahl shook his head, "I honestly don't know, Emme. Several people are just frightened for you, whatever the reason is. I'm nowhere near the top of the line, and I just take orders..." Every time he mentioned his station, he felt his heart sink a little more. It felt like she was just a job, and sometimes in his mind, she really was. But looking out at this frightened girl, right in front of him, a real person with real feelings and being, he simply couldn't think of her as such... and it killed him a little within to give such excuses.

But for now.. he had no other.

Now, he couldn't meet her eyes.

Well. Might as well. You didn't join the resistance to be a lair, did you?

"..Honestly, originally yes. It was just orders." He looked up, finally, honesty very bright in his eyes, "..Then I got to know you a little. And I found out that you're a decent human being, a good person, and I don't believe good people ought to be targeted for political goals or gains. I think we all have a right to be free and be safe..."

Well. Here goes.

He extended his hand to her, "C'mon. I'm going to get you out of here and somewhere safe." From the look in his eye, he meant it. He really did.

"Now...wait just a minute..."

Emme backed away a bit. "I don't even really know you, Mr. Vahl. I've only met you twice before..." Her heart was really racing now. "Where do you want to take me? Who's after me, exactly? How long would I be gone?"

She had so many questions, but from the look in his eyes, she doubted he would be entirely truthful. She knew how this business worked, how everything was secret from people like her.

Whether she knew it or not, the look in his eyes was entirely truthful.

He breathed out a sigh again, and let his hand drop. He continued to meet her eyes throughout, letting eyes drop was usually a clear sign of lying.

"I know this is rushed... but I don't know myself many of those answers. I have no idea who might want to wish harm on you, but I know that there is someone out there. I don't know how long you'll be hiding out either... I assume until the situation is considered safe. I'm just a messenger..." He nearly growled behind his teeth, frustrated at the entirety of the situation, and understanding why Emme would be so untrusting to him.

"...I was instructed to take you to a place not too far from here. But, they didn't necessarily tell me to ask." For her benefit, Triar took a step back, giving her a bit more personal space with which to deal with the issue presented to her. "...But I am no kidnapper. And I think that you, having gone through much the same that I have, understand what could happen." He let it hang in the air there for a few seconds, letting the poor woman get her bearings.

"...So, what do you say?"

She wrung her hands, casting her eyes down. "Dze," she whispered, helplessly. "I need to get a few things from home..."

Post Re: Is This a Date? - Clock's Eve side thread (Triar)
Triar could not look at her without immense pity.

He saw it there, her life crumbling more and more away as each day passed, as this horrid war crept into her existence, and pecked more and more at it daily, until there would be nothing left. He knew that feeling all too well. He knew what it was like to have your whole life stolen, and be put into a situation where you had to fight or give up... and he saw it there on her, about ready to give up.

"..I'm so sorry, Emme. If I could have stopped any of this..."

He paused. He wasn't sure if it was appropriate or not, but Triar decided he should anyways. He reached out and placed a very gentle hand on her shoulder, attempting to be reassuring.

"..If it helps any, I'm not going to leave your side."
