Almost as if the author had been on a ship tossed at sea while trying for whatever foolish reason to write at all. Intas 6th, 2712 AT Somewhere very close, yet a little too far from Old Rose Harbor ... This is the last clocking time I agree to hire out my sword-arm to a mung cargo ship. I am writing this down for my own sake - never again! Clocking storms, raining springs and gears on us, tossing this sorry excuse for a boat about on the waves (oh the waves!) ... This was by far my worst sea experience. I have thanked Aloie for not sending me overboard, despite me losing more than a handful of my terrible meals into the sea instead. While this particular hire was nothing special, the storminess of the trip to Dutaim and back has really turned my whole clocking self sour on the idea of ever being a pirate. At least, the sea-faring kind. Whatever that cargo was that needed a few sharp blades in case of pirates, I hope it was clocking worth it! The captain, if I dare to compliment the natt in such a way, promises we'll be back to Old Rose tomorrow before dawn. As much as that rat's nest of underground that is the Harbor sometimes turns me out in the cold because of my supposed "risk to society," I have grown a little fond of the place. I certainly haven't starved - there's plenty of folks who need a good sword arm on occasion ... and at least a handful who are willing to look past the passive behind the blade. Maybe the coin I get out of this will finally earn me enough to buy a good Moa and do some traveling again ... just, not on a ship. Ever. Again. This morning I had been quite settled on purchasing myself a Moa and setting off from Old Rose to travel again, but I guess the gods had different plans. Not only was my selection of Moas poor and the prices high, but I ended up enjoying lunch with some friendly faces instead. Well, I was definitely lucky the poor man I ran into, Endo, was friendly ... That could have gone differently if it was anyone else. And it was quite a surprise to see Calli here in the Harbor. It's been years since I've really run into any other Crows. Was it my fault? Maybe sometimes. I know I can find them if I wanted to, even travel with them again. But, something keeps me from it. Apologies for neglecting you, poor journal. Traveling with a bunch of interesting Circus folk make it difficult to find time to myself to write. There's always something going on with this crowd, and I admit that I can't really complain. We've finally arrived in Vienda. Gods, I haven't been here in years. Eight? Ten maybe? Not since I dusted the soot off my boots and left with the clothes on my back. I could fill all of these pages with memories just the sight of the city walls bring flooding back to my senses, but it would all be a waste. One of these days, I will have to leave all of that behind. I can only hope coming back here will heal all these old wounds instead of open them again. I know I didn't spend much time here in Brunnhold as a kid, mostly out of fear of getting caught up as an indentured servant instead of the street life, but I still felt the need to come back here and settle some scores. The list of things stolen and borrowed is longest for this place than any other. Alioe, I was a kid last time I was here after my parents ... Did I hope to see my sister on the streets, even now? Surely, I did ... foolish though it was. Instead, I was graced with a glimpse of the life I somehow managed to escape. Wendy will forever be the face of servitude for me. I don't think I can forget that. I was given a real gift; I had forgotten just how dear the freedom I have fought to keep is, even if I am still disappointed in what I perceive as it's shallowness. I am sure now that what I have is much more valuable than I knew until today. You have my thanks, Wendy. May Alioe keep that fire burning in your spirit. I've decided to do my best to keep in touch with the servant woman. Perhaps it will help us both understand our places here in Anaxas. Rosie, the kind bakery lady that she apparently is, has agreed to aid me in the risky business of exchanging mail. I hope she stays safe with that. I suppose I'll return to Vienda and the Circus. Coming here put many things to rest, but seeing the capitol still makes my heart ache. While the scars from my many beatings are just that; I can almost feel them again when I am back there. Everything is changing, but it is finally for the better. I can't put my finger on it, or really write it into words. Sometimes, these things escape me. Maybe all it really does take is a new change of clothes to bring about a fresh perspective on things. It's interesting how in one moment, you can be so sure of everything, and yet the next it all falls apart. I have always known that it would happen some day – my diablerie – and yet, I have always hoped I would never live through it. I really never wanted to see the other side, to live knowing the consequences of my birthright. Sweet Alioe, you have quite the sense of humor! You open my eyes to what any other galdor would call my curse only to shove an unexpected blessing in my hands at the same time. Part of me cries that I deserve neither: One is by far more beautiful and kind and gentle than the other, and I am obviously not talking about the silent spell that forever lies in wait somewhere inside of me ... However, part of me also cries that I can at least handle my spell better than the heart of someone else! P.S. I see now that extreme duress must be one trigger for my diablerie. The hulking, unintelligent excuse for a man that tried to strangle me for actually being honorable almost had me, but, if it was the mona that stepped in, I am thankful. They may not listen to my voice, but they still hear me. P.P.S. I can't say I know or understand the effects of my spell. It killed the man I was fighting, and yet did not affect me. The feeling of my own field – if i can even presume to call it that – was fascinating and terrifying at the same time. I don't know what happened to everyone else. While I know that I said I'd never willingly travel on board a ship if I could help it, it seems as though I've found myself with little choice. At least the trip from Vienda to the Harbor is by river and is a short voyage. This trip will be nothing like the stormy seas I endured almost two months ago, so I honestly have no reason to complain. Getting to know my doctor employer through a rather embarrassing game of Kingdoms yesterday was interesting enough, and I'm sure the Captain and myself would have plenty to talk about had I not put some of my illusions of galdori grandeur away years ago. I can only say I hope I haven't gotten myself in over my head. What I thought was a simple sort of escort has become more and more complicated. My gut tells me Doctor Mottoni has a lot more to say but is keeping it to himself, and while I normally can sympathize with folks who carry secrets, when it comes to what I'm walking into ... well, I'm not so sure. I'll just have to trust that Alioe doesn't intend to hand me all the beautiful gifts she has as a cruel and short-lived joke at my expense. There is at least one lovely face I'd like to see again once this is over ...
