!!!Backstory
All families have, if not a black sheep, then one who is slightly grey around the edges. Alden is such a greyish sheep. His father, Meren Mavorian, was a lawyer, and about a cheerful and warm a man as to be compared with an iceberg. He hardly noticed the birth of his forth and last child, which was quite an achievement, seeing as it was his only son. Alden's mother, Pila, was an intelligent woman, if a bit distant and dreamy, and thus Alden grew up surrounded by women. He and his three sisters roamed about the neighbourhood in the evenings, and were held inside to learn manners and other social skills in the day. Alden was always a difficult child, as he had troubles combining the virtues of being honest and being polite. He was also a bit too smart for his own good, and liked making the various governesses he had uncomfortable. This head of his often got him into trouble, but it was not always sharp enough to get him unharmed out again. The only thing Alden found interesting in these lessons was learning to play the piano, something he had a certain talent for.
He was enrolled at Brunnhold as per usual, with an average score in the initiation test. However he didn't do well at school, due to having difficulties with reading and writing. The teachers shook their heads; he was after all a bright lad. His inability to read they more or less dismissed as laziness. They held some lessons where the students were taught spells orally, and then he did very well. The disadvantage of not being able to look up spells in a book was unfortunately so problematic that he couldn't get all his potential to use, and so all ambition he might have nurtured died before he was twelve.
He was not very popular, not being academically inclined, but his oral gifts were quite remarkable. His tendency to come up with new creative pranks and his dry humor was probably what kept him from being bullied too badly. As his nose tended to be put into places it did not belong, he often wound up in fights.
After school he was supposed to join his father's firm, but he was not accepted because he couldn't understand the paperwork. His father died when he was twenty-one, and the lawyer's firm was sold. Alden felt guilty because he couldn't keep the family tradition, but was also grateful he did not have to follow in his father's tight, icy shoes. His mother came to the end of her days shortly afterwards, and his oldest sister, Gelina, became head of the family fortune.
Alden began earning his money by playing piano in various settings, and doing small jobs in between. It wouldn't have been enough to pay even his extremely small flat, hadn't it been for the fact that his sister insisted upon giving him quite a sum of money.
At twenty-four, he opened his own part-time investigation firm, inspired by stories about the wonders and excitements of hunting down criminals. He has had six cases since then; five people who wondered whether their husbands or wives were unfaithful, and one case of a disappeared parrot.
!!!Personality
One of Alden's defining features is his honesty, which can border on the downright impolite.
As a child he was told to tell the truth, and he happily obliges, maybe a bit too eagerly at times. He can hurt people this way, but he doesn't always understand when he does. He hasn't got the best of social skills.
He also has an unnerving tendency to be nosy of just about anything. His tongue sometimes speeds in front of his brain, something that has, among other things, granted him a broken nose.
Though he can be abrupt and a tad sarcastic, he is not a bad man, and he is fiercely lojal to his friends and family. He can even be sentimental at times.
He doesn't like children, children usually don't like him.
Vanity isn't beyond him, and he rather likes himself. Just that bit too much, it has been argued. However, when it comes to academical things, he has very little faith in himself.
Alden is someone who looks on the bright side of life, even if he has to squint to find it. He writes music that he primarily plays on his old, battered piano. Bonding with other people doesn't come easy to him; he never trusts them entirely in the beginning. It takes time to get to know him, he will put up an ironic facade until he feels safe.
He's really bad at heights.
!!!Physical Description
Rather heavily built for his race and not terribly tall, he can be recognized in a crowd mostly through his way of moving; whimsical like a butterfly, always in motion. He might be perceived as restless. He's got brown, slightly protruding eyes with long lashes, fair skin and chestnut brown hair. He often wrinkles his forehead. His brows are a little bit on the heavy side. His nose is broken, but not noticeably off.
