!!!Backstory

When Elijah Quarterstone met Nene Latres, he was a young man of no more than seventeen. Nene was a little bit older, with a bright, sparkling laugh and limbs that flickered when she moved. Elijah fell instantly in love, declaring eternal intentions despite family objections to their son marrying a wick woman (and a spoke at that). Elijah didn't listen. Nene had a child, little Alicia, and for a time they were happy. Then when Alicia was about two, Nene vanished in the night, never to be seen again.

After that, Elijah was a changed man-- for the worse. He grew bitter and angry, his love for Nene turning into a distinct dislike for wicks of all sort. Anything "wickish" became anathema in the Quarterstone household, including the learning and usage of magic. Alicia grew from a small, meek child to a pinched, nervous woman. When she was sixteen she met Kevin Rhonstadt, the tsat son of two settled spokes. Elijah's distaste for Kevin weighed heavily on Alicia, but it was eventually concluded that Kevin was respectable enough, for a wick, and they were married.

Two years later, Alicia had Jeremiah. He would prove to be not only their first but only child; soon after his birth Alicia came down with a fever that rendered her unable to carry children. Jer was a sincere, quiet child. All his life it was impressed upon him that his elders and his family were to be treated with respect and deference, so he did. Rarely did Jer fight against the looming presence of his grandfather in his life. Under his grandfather's insistence, young Jeremiah had as little interaction with other wicks as possible, the only real exception being the occasional visits from his father's family. He, like his mother before him, learned no magic, got no tattoos, and aside from an ill-advised ear piercing his grandfather had threatened to rip from his head, he didn't even have the outward trappings of his race. If his father had any objections to the way his son was being raised, he never voiced any. Their household was fully dominated by Elijah Quarterstone's heavy hand.

Nevertheless, it was difficult for Elijah to keep Jer completely under his thumb. With his father's family coming through as often as they did, it was inevitable that he would come to keep the company of some of his cousins, at least handful of them close to him in age. One year they invited him to go with them to Surwood. Jer was young, and unhappy with having to constantly deny any wickish part of himself. The idea was tempting. His cousins kept asking. So Jeremiah Rhonstadt did what was possibly the most nerve-wracking, dangerous thing in his life to date-- he defied his grandfather.

Not openly, of course. He told his mother and grandfather he was going on a fishing trip with a few friends, all of them human boys who had agreed to help him out. He trusted his father alone with where he was really going. His father kept his secret.

Strangely enough, the lie proved itself to be true. It was when he got there that he met Caiaphas Spindle. The two got on rather well, especially when it proved that the both of them had a vested interest in fishing.

Much to the displeasure of his grandfather, Jer continued to go for years after that, spending his time with Cai. After quite a long time of this, Cai finally proposed. Jer said yes. When he went home that time, it would be the second great defiance of his life. His grandfather hated Cai, hated that his grandson was marrying him, and most of all hated that he was a wick. Elijah forbade it. Alicia cried-- how would she ever have grandchildren now? And Kevin said nothing at all, which was as close as he would ever come to telling Jer he approved. The second great defiance of his life, they married in Surwood, in the company of Cai's family and tribe.

Jer could never travel with the tribe, no matter how much he would want to-- it would break his mother's heart. So after her tearful insistence (and much crying about how she didn't want to lose her only child), Jeremiah settled in Vienda. There he and Cai opened their smithy with money that had been carefully saved by multiple parties, and there he has been ever since. His life has contained no great upsets, though he has been growing ever more restless since the riots in Intas.

!!!Personality

Jer is quiet and monosyllabic, until you get to know him better; then he can be at times sarcastic and a bit mean, though much more talkative. He's uncomfortable with open displays of affection, especially in public. Essentially a good man, deeply loyal with a particular emphasis on familial relationships.

He is mostly passive, not the sort of man to ever organize/initiate anything-- for the most part, he just wants to keep his head down and his nose clean, with very few exceptions (almost all of those involving his husband or family). What he does, he does with sincerity.

He tries to maintain a quiet, modest sort of life running the forge and just making sure he can get by. He is quite fond of leisure time, devoting large amounts of it to whittling. The rest is usually spent fishing; ideally, he would combine the two activities.

!!!Physical Description

Marginally taller than average, and thickset all around. At one time Jer had the solid body of an athlete, but as he's getting older the muscle is starting to turn a bit to fat. He has large, broad hands, covered in thick callouses from a lifetime of hard work. His face used to have a sort of wholesome, athletic handsomeness to it, and traces of that can still be seen though by this age life has worn hard enough on him to knock a lot of it out. His jaw is heavy and squared, his nose broad, aquiline and broken in the middle. He has dark blonde hair clipped short and close to the skull, sideburns trailing down his jaw, and eyes a heavy gold color.

There are about 5-6 piercings in each of his ears, mostly modest metal hoops. His right shoulder is covered in a thick black coat of loops and swirls. Below that there's a band across the bicep, small dots set in pairs on either side of the band in wide intervals. There is a sort of tribal design across his chest, and a stylized fish moving from his left shoulder to the middle of his back. He has a scar across his collarbone on the left side from a break.

!!!Goals

Jer wants nothing more than to live a happy life with his husband until they both die of old age and to run his forge. In the more immediate future he'd like to try, perhaps, to make something of his whittling to bring in a little extra money.

Unspoken and unacknowledged even to himself, Jer thinks it might be approaching time to leave Vienda. He is increasingly concerned for the welfare of his parents, and for the stability of his own life with Cai. He is afraid his fragile peace will be shattered by overzealous Seventen. The idea of a house in the country, by a lake or river perhaps, sounds ever more tempting.

Jer is getting old, and the older he gets the more he just wants to retire from the hustle-bustle of the world of men.
