Post Days of the Week
For a long time we've been dealing with the rather cumbersome days of the week system in Thorns - using the number of the day to identify it, i.e. "sevens" or "nines". When I initially devised this system I had no idea how annoying it would prove to be in actual use; it is very easy to mistake the name of the day "ones" for another meaning, for example. It's also confusing when you consider that you can refer to both the tenth of the month and the "tens" of the month.

There is another naming system in place (viewable on the wiki under Days of the Week) but it is confined to Anhau, as I invented it after the fact and didn't want to retcon it in. My plan was originally to let the majority of Vita "rediscover" this ancient naming method and begin to put it into popular use. This is a relatively flimsy explanation, however, and doesn't seem very realistic.

These are the days from the wiki, in singular form, and adding an s forms the plural (as in I'll stop by on Aldia vs. we are closed on Aldias and Hudias:

*Aldia(s)
*Hudia(s)
*Badia(s)
*Vuldia(s)
*Rodia(s)
*Vespia(s)
*Hurtia(s)
*Imadia(s)
*Naudia(s)
*Ophia(s)

The question is whether a retcon for "days of the week" (which is not entirely a retcon, as to my knowledge we've never stated in RP that the days of the week have no names) would be beneficial to the game by implementing more logical organization, or just add an unnecessary level of detail to the already unusual calendar system. I doubt this retcon would affect gameplay much, since the system we have now is so confusing that most people just avoid referring to the days of the week altogether.

So I'm going to put up this poll. Do you think we should retcon the days of the week to have these established Anhai names?

I'd rather keep it the way it is. It might take some care writing with, but it is easy to memorize.
I still have to look up the wiki each time I need a month name. That's not too bad because we don't change month every day... But for days, I'm really more comfortable like that.

(okay, I'll adjust. But you've got my opinion)

I'd actually really like to use names for the days of the week-- it feels, to me, awkward to have to refer to them by numbers.

This may sound strange, but using numbers seems somehow more "galdorian" to me. (Perhaps in relation to the obsession with clocks and timepieces?) Dunno.

I'm cool with either way.

I like the names aesthetically and they would provide some clarity, but everyone would have to learn them for that clarity to.. umm.. happen. I'd be willing to do that (it might make me learn the names of all those other gods as an extra bonus {cha-ching}), but the transition period of confusing doom would be pretty.. doom-y. shaddup, it's early and i'm on my first cuppa.

So long as we keep day numbers in the thread titles, like (L14), I'm not sure it would come up all too often, anyway. :)

I am in favor of the days being named. However I would prefer to see a different system of naming for the anaxi days. Deity-day-names clearly have historical precedent, as do numbers, but possibly something different would be fun.

I keep returning to the canonical hours (the ones used by, for example, benedictine monks) and thinking that a quasi-metaphorical system for the day names (referring to their sequence without strict numbering) might be interesting.

Clockwork terms also come to mind as an interesting possibility.

I rather like the number system. It's easier for me to remember, since all months have the same number of days, so saying 'sevens' and 'nines' is cake for my ADOS mind (that's Attention Deficit--Oooh! Shiny!). If we institute a naming system...I'm gonna be honest, I'll never refer to them in game by name because I don't want to have to look it up every time I need to know what day it is. Call it lazy, or whatever, but you asked for opinions and that's mine. ;)

sular, do you have an example of what you mean regarding the metaphorical naming system? that sounds very interesting indeed. I agree that god-names are getting old fast. I only chose it because it seemed similar to our own system of naming days.

I understand the difficulty of memorization! If I added a quick-reference calendar to the top bar links, do you guys think it would help with that?

To be honest, I think we'd just be overcomplicating things and everyone would forget the day names. Sticking to numbers is quick, easy and simple. Making it more complex isn't necessarily a good idea.

If we're divided on this, the easiest solution is to go with the original plan.. have only those in Anhau use the names as a relic of ancient times, and everyone else use the numbers. that way when anhau opens to the rest of the world, people will have a choice.
