 Juniper Cassle
'''Name:'''Juniper Cassle '''Age:'''17 '''Race:'''Wick '''Place of Origin:'''Vienda
!!!Backstory Juniper was born seventeen years ago in a fevered drunk love affair between a human barmaid and a golly patron fallen on hard times. It was a slow night; they were both bored out of their skulls and drunk as all get-out. A few months later, Delly Cassle couldn't get herself into her signature corset anymore, and it was clear that Juniper was on the way.
Delly named June after the main ingredient in her favorite spirit. She was not a particularly inspired namer. Soon after his birth, his mother got a job at a more respectable establishment (read: a non-sleazy bar), and raised her son as a proper upstanding member of society. This meant, of course, pretending that she was, too. There were time-outs. There was a swear jar. June had to be in by sundown, he had to stay out of bars and bad areas, he had to follow all these rules. It was stifling for a naturally contentious and troublemaking little wick like himself. He put up with the boundaries for years, grumbling under his breath and stomping and slamming the door to his room. There were quite a few utterances of "I hate you, Ma! You don't understand me at all!"
As the boy got on in years, Delly just didn't know what to do anymore. She had been a good mother. She had done everything right! All the other women on the block said she was doing a good job. But that boy of hers just wouldn't listen.
One day, when he had just turned seventeen, a girl he'd fooled around with while his mother was at her night job came over to tell him that he'd gotten her pregnant and he'd certainly better do something about it, chimes. Being a teenage boy didn't help, but overall Juni just didn't want to be tied down, and he ran. He left a note for his mother that didn't say much at all, packed things in the middle of the night when his mother was at work. A lot seemed to happen when Delly was at work. Primarily because that was most of the time. Setting out from the gates of Vienda after midnight, he made his way to Old Rose Harbor on foot.
Juniper had always wanted to go to the Harbor. He perceived it as a place of freedom, and especially somewhere where there were no mothers with rules. His first night in the harbor, though, he missed home terribly. No room of his own, no comfy bed. He slept in a damp alley, swore rats were running over his face every time he shut his eyes. He woke the next morning, resolving to find somewhere to stay. As it so happened, the little damp alley was by a restaurant of sorts. Sleepy in the early morning dark, he fell against the back door. The boy was small, but not that small, and the owner, who was just opening up, heard and brought the boy inside.
The restuarant was called the Murky Moon. The owner, Maynard Buehler, figured it out after a long sleepless night after his eyesight had gone blurry. Buehler gave him a job there and a little closet-like part of his apartment, rent for it taken out of his wages. Which were abysmal. Juniper cooked the bad hours, but he didn't mind. The first day on the job he'd discovered a love for cooking that he just hadn't known about, and he would enjoy this job even if there was no pay. Cooking simply came naturally to him. The shop owner didn't care where he went after his shifts, so of course the boy made a point to run around all the bad parts of town, drinking and making a fool out of himself. He learned Tek by ear in bars, got a few tattoos. Overall, after almost a year, he's steeped like a tea in Old Rose. In fact...he's nearly bored of it. !!!Personality Juniper, overall, thinks he's the slickest fish in the sea. For one, he actually believes he's incredibly attractive, despite evidence to the contrary. (Women/men generally prefer those who don't look like they're small children, except for those most people aren't interested in.) This has been contested but is proven in June's mind, which is really all that matters. He does things largely for himself, though if doing something for someone else strikes his fancy, he'll do it. His thought process is based largely around whims. If he feels like doing it, well, he pretty much will, and also the contrary: if he doesn't feel like doing something, he won't, unless you have some significant persuasive techniques to fix this whim.
He doesn't consider personality much in romantic pursuits; however, attractiveness is key. Pretty people almost always gain attention from Juniper. Many of the words he knows in Tek are those used to proposition a young wick or witch, and he uses them liberally. Sometimes he gets the meaning wrong, and unintentionally insults his object of interest. This does not usually faze him. However, he can take a hint when someone isn't into it and will simply move on.
He thinks he's rebellious. He has attempted to smoke, and can fake it (though not convincingly) as his first attempt told him that smoking makes him cough. He is forever attempting to get into the wick counterculture and would dearly love to be a member of the Black Hand tribe he's heard about. However, whenever he attempts to ingratiate himself with members roving the cities, he usually gets led off on some stupid trick or another. He can be very naive when he thinks he's going to get something he wants, and things are really never too good to be true. He does not like authority figures, but does have a sense of adventure. Often he's wondered what flying in an aeroship is like. The grass is always greener on the other side for him: most of his tendencies settle around wanting to do whatever no one else wants him to do. Delly arguably would have had an easier time getting him to be a good 'human' boy if she had simply told him to act like a bad seed. This contrary attitude is what has developed most of his deviant behaviors.
!!!Physical Description Juniper is mysteriously much darker and more freckled than his mother...the gossip mill believes his one-night-stand of a father must have been part Hessean or Mugrobi to achieve his skin. His hair is blonde, but is curiously straight and not wooly. He currently has it dyed an inky teal, and it's shaggy as all get-out. The front of it sticks out of a large slouchy striped cap and nearly covers his dark brown eyes, while the back covers most of his neck. He has a small silver hoop earring in his left ear. He can't remember getting it, nor the tattoo of black lines circling his biceps on one arm that he usually ends up covering with baggy clothes anyway. The baggy clothes do nothing for him; Juniper looks far too small for his age. Although he's nearly eighteen this year, he's still under five feet tall and small-boned. He can appear close to twelve, in fact. The small bones are clearly visible; despite being a cook, Juniper rarely gets to eat much of what he makes. To top off the outfit of large things, Juniper wears a large pair of shiny, black, deliciously stompy boots. A male patron left them in Delly's bar some years ago, and she took them after closing up in the morning and gave them to Juniper, since his previous shoes had worn out. They were huge then, and are still huge now. He stuffs the toes with newspaper. His clothes are often hand-me-downs, in fact; this may explain their size. From far away, the boy looks sort of like an egg-shaped sack.
!!!Inventory *Rent of a small room in Buehler's larger apartment. It has a separate entrance from the main house, which Juni enjoys immensely since no one bugs him about being out at all hours. Which, despite working the hangover shift, he does. The room is dingy and has yellowish-grey water-stained walls and ceiling, though they may have been white at the beginning of the room's creation. His little pallet is pushed up against one wall, and between it and the opposite wall is a pile of rumpled hand-me-down clothes. It is not clear which of these are clean or dirty, but Juniper seems to know through some sort of intuition. High on the wall across from the foot-end of the pallet is a dirty little window. It's nearly impossible to look out of. Juniper cleans it when he remembers. So far he has not remembered. *A very old book of recipes. Juniper saved it from the rains, and bugged Buehler, who considers himself quite worldly, to teach him how to read it. Delly didn't have the time to secure him lessons in Vienda with her many jobs. Although his grasp of reading is still rudimentary at best, owing to his tutor's equally meager skills,he has memorized all of the good recipes and can execute his favorites quite well. Some of the clientele know this and will ask for a special meal. Buehler likes this because he gets to charge extra. *Various dumpy baggy clothing. His favorite shirt is clearly made for a much larger man and is a slightly off-putting shade of mustard yellow. He has several pairs of neutral-colored pants that are cutoffs from pairs with mud stains and the like. One had blood stains. Juniper does not like those pants.
!!!Career Aspiring Chef *Has basic restaurant cook skills. *Can also wash dishes and serve drinks fast, due to his several jobs in the establishment. *Rudimentary reading and writing skills, for scrawling down recipes and then reading said chicken scratch.
!!!Goals *Become a famous chef, well-known all over the world. *Do something clocking interesting, for once. *Figure out what color to dye hair next.
