Basically, this is it: Mary Sue... is a pejorative term used to describe a fictional character who plays a major role in the plot and is particularly characterized by overly idealized and hackneyed mannerisms, lacking noteworthy flaws, and primarily functioning as wish-fulfillment fantasies for their authors. Perhaps the single underlying feature of [Mary Sues] is that they are too ostentatious for the audience's taste, or that the author seems to favor the character too highly. The author may seem to push how exceptional and wonderful the "Mary Sue" character is on his or her audience, sometimes leading the audience to dislike or even resent the character fairly quickly. Three pages of an old webcomic that didn't go anywhere, but shows a Mary-Sue in action: 1, 2, 3. The more you know!

Re: gossip thread - THE SEQUEL In RP, mary sues don't really exist beyond character creation. Your character can BE a mary sue in the beginning, but they won't necessarily be treated like one, because you don't control the whole story.. so most of them revert into normal, not-so-perfect characters once they get going. Actually I think mary sues get put into worse situations in RP just because everyone is trying to screw them up.

Most characters start out as Mary Sues anyways.(they're essentially idealized versions of ourselves in some way shape or form, if they weren't...well this would be really boring wouldn't it?)

Re: gossip thread - THE SEQUEL I disagree! I think idealised characters are boring. Like all the f***ers on "lost" who pretty much every epsiode decide to go on a 24 hour uninterrupted hike through miscellaneous jungle on some kind of stubborn heroic principle, NO MATTER THE COST.

I think flawed characters are much more interesting. People who are hypocrites, people who do things that they KNOW are bad, who have moments of weakness and failure. That's I think how you make a character feel real.
And that's probably why people have strongly objected to you using the term mary-sue, even though you obviously didn't mean to upset anyone.
