Submit Wiki Contributions - Culture Page
This page is for the submission of ideas for the Vitan Culture Page! If you have any ideas about additions to the culture of Vita, submit them here. We are reviewing all submissions, so keep in mind that your idea might be accepted and might not be. If your contribution is accepted, we will announce it on here. Don't take it personally if your idea isn't adopted into the wiki; we do have space concerns, and only suggestions which we feel would add to the game world in a unique way will be taken, so we have to be picky. Please do not suggest things that already exist in the real world (or are very close to existing things), even if they have a Vitan twist or flavor. Some sections that welcome player suggestions: - Literature. This section includes Tales and Myths, Famous Books and Passive Proverbs. You can write fairy tales, age-old myths involving the mythic beasts or some ancient hero of your own conception, or anything else you want. Feel free to invent folk heroes and even different kinds of spirits. Galdori myths and legends usually involve the gods interacting with galdori, and lots of magic; human fairy tales generally don't have magic as we know it, but can include supernatural events. For books, you just need the title and author. We need grims, but also magical theory books, popular fiction, and research books. Feel free to make up names willy-nilly. If you write a passive proverb, please make it meaningful to a passive's daily life and written in a way that suggests a proverb, not just a truism. - Entertainment. This section includes Songs, Dances, Performance Arts, and Games. If you're musically inclined you can write a song, but if not, you could just write a poem and pretend it's a song. Drinking songs, pirate chanteys, nursery rhymes, whatever you want. If they reference Thorniverse stuff, awesome, but they don't have to. For dances, please describe the dance and its cultural significance. For Performance Arts, please describe the play, opera or musical and give a title and a composer. Please no "songs based on songs" or parodies. - Food and Drink. You can submit original dishes or variations on real dishes, perhaps using Vitan ingredients like hingle, garmon (thanks Nora!) or apah. You don't need to make the recipe, you can just name a dish. If you have any home recipes that you think would fit into the Thorniverse, you can submit those as well! You may also submit ideas for alcoholic or regular beverages. - Fashion and Hairstyles - Feel free to submit drawings of your idea. If accepted your style will be re-drawn in the wiki style. If you have an idea for a NEW section of the Culture page, feel free to suggest one!

I was thinking factory working women would have to wear pants...or maybe more conservative traveling wicks, if they wanted to go on horseback. And for winter:

Re: Submit Wiki Contributions - Culture Page
I have a song that I addapted for the ThornWorld, that I think is really good. Its one of my favorite songs in real life, but it is very very old so hardly anybody knows about it. It is called "All the Pretty Little Horses" by Peter, Paul, and Mary.
Lost Moon Tribe Lullaby
Hush-a-by don’t you cry go to sleep ye little bochi
When you wake you shall have all the pretty little horses
dapples and bays pintos and grays all the pretty little horses
Way down yonder In the meadow poor little bochi crying daoa
birds and the butterflies flutter round his eyes poor little bochi crying daoa
Hush-a-by don’t you cry go to sleep ye little bochi
when you wake you shall have all the pretty little horses
Hush-a-by don’t you cry go to sleep ye little bochi

Re: Submit Wiki Contributions - Culture Page
I love PPM, and I've always been a fan of that song!
I'd say...in keeping with the rhythm of the song itself, change 'boch' to 'bochi'. The beauty of tek is that even though it's all made up, you can play around with the words and change things here and there to fit whatever you want to say/do.
At least, I do...haha. Annie can't ever manage to say anything right in tek. Heh.
You did a good job!

Re: Submit Wiki Contributions - Culture Page
It's actually a very old slave song, Peter Paul and Mary just covered it.

Re: Submit Wiki Contributions - Culture Page
I finished the song for Charlie! I posted it in the Creative Endevors forum, but I wanted to post it here as well... I plan for my character to make this a very popular little tune in the Thorns World... lol
It can be sung like the Hoedown from "who's line is it anyway" but it could be sung in any way it makes sence to the reader. I've heard good things about it so far... And Here it is!
~The Ballad Of Charlie's Folly~
Intro: Aie, No' man, nor wick, nor golly Is safe from Charlie's Folly Stanza I : As I whent down to Old Rose A couple moons ago I met a man named Charlie I hand not known before He Seemed a pretty fine fellow, For a galdor man ya know? That is, till he set drinkin' And his other side did show! Chorus: Oh~! Watch out all ye pretty men Da, guard ye daughters well, For When'll Charlie be on the run again? Only time will tell. Stanza II : Oh, Charlie he took grinin' A twinkle in his eye With his face all a flushin' You'd know t'was on his mind An' with a wink, 'afor ya think, His hand'd be on my thigh! Oh, t'was ne'er a man so randy As charlie was that night! Chorus: Oh~! Watch out all ye pretty men Da, guard ye daughters well, Cause when'll Charlie strike again? Only time will tell. Stanza III : I did fair quickly dust As you might have guessed Oh, in such a set as I Ye'd done the same I trust But I'm far from the first O' Charlie's gutter'd curse An' many a maid would agree. There's no stoppin' this boy's lust! Chorus: Oh~! Watch out all ye pretty boys Da, guard ye daughter's well When'll ol' Charlie rise again? Only time will tell Stanza IV : So listen here, an' listen all ye An' take this warnin' dear An' when ol' Charlie's commin' round Make sure ye stay clear! Aie, for no' man, nor wick nor golly Is safe~From~Char~Lie's FOLLY!

Re: Submit Wiki Contributions - Culture Page
stayed up late to crank this one out - i was inspired by the great song "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." hope it amuses (and let me know of any editing that needs to be done) This is a song sung mainly in the Dives, or at least when the Seventen aren’t around since it’s directed at them in a derogatory manner. It’s a rough allegory of Jon Serro’s leadership in the fight for freedom from the galdor oppression, with an optimistic (if not amusing) ending. It’s rowdy, fast, and made for a band and fiddler who can play even faster. The verses are spoken in a monotone voice by the lead singer, and the chorus and bridge are sung with the audience joining in on harmony.Gollie's FollyA gollie went down to Hollow Street, he was looking to pick a fight His day had been slow, so he was rarin’ ta go, even if it was late at night Well he came across this young ace mixin’ up drinks an’ havin’ some fun So he hopped down from his old blackback and said “Hey, you listen, son – “I bet you’d never guess it, but I’m a fantastic drinker, too. “And if you think you’re man enough, I’ll make a bet with you: “Looks like you can put it away real good, but just wait until I’m through - “I bet tonight’s stub against you, bub, ‘cos I know I’m better than you!” The ace said: “My name’s Johnny, and you’re a gollie, that’s plain to see, “But I’ll take that bet, so better get set, ‘cos I’m better than you’ll ever be.”*Bridge*Johnny, beware - you better take care – this gollie ent messin’ aroun’ ‘Cos he’s been keepin’ tabs on you an’ the rest o’ the underground An’ if you win you get respect an’ freedom without dread But if you lose, the gollie gets your head! The gollie sat down at the table and said, “Here’s how to be a man…” And he quickly chugged a tankard o’ rum and tossed back a Dirty Chan He went through whiskey, wine, and beer, and a jug o’ Hatcher Piss And if the sounds in his stomach were music, it’d have sounded just like this:*Fiddle solo*When the gollie finished, Johnny said, “Not bad, oh goney one, “But if you stop gaggin’ for just a tick, I’ll show you how it’s done!”*Chorus*Ol’ Queen’s Corpse, now mix it up good Gollie’s gone an’ lost it, knock on wood A dose of Gingcot, an’ all the rest “When wantin’ a tool, eyes and ears work best!”*Fiddle solo*The gollie glared as he took the cup – he’d sworn he wouldn’t be beat But that mixture knocked him on his erse, out cold at Johnny’s feet And Johnny stood over his guttered foe and said with a powerful grin, “Told ya moony son of a b**** that I was gonna win!”*Chorus*Ol’ Queen’s Corpse, now mix it up good Gollie’s gone an’ lost it, knock on wood A dose of Gingcot, an’ all the rest “When wantin’ a tool, eyes and ears work best!”

Re: Submit Wiki Contributions - Culture Page
Ballad of Charlie is approved.
Merry, I'd rather the song be called Golly's Folly, since it's bordering on a parody. (the only parody songs we really encourage are in the category of ship-hop, which never makes it way into canon anyway. songs that come too close to real-life songs could potentially take away from the originality of the universe, but this is far enough away from the real thing to be unrecognizable without the tune, I think.)

Re: Submit Wiki Contributions - Culture Page
I didn’t know if there were actual uniforms for the passives, but obviously they would need something blue to wear when they first come to brunnhold. I figure they can wear whatever they want as long as it’s blue, unless that’s not how it works, and these uniforms would just be for new arrivals. All of these ideas would be one size fits all, galdori don’t have time to waste on fitting clothes to passives! So for this first one the girls get a poofyish high collar dress with a belt to fit it to them better. The belt snaps or buttons in the front, and i guess could be made of elastic or just regular material. It has pants underneath it, socks, and bootish shoes. I’m not sure what underwear a girl wears in the thornsiverse, but i made it shortsy for the boys, a high collar shirt made like the girls dress with the same belt, and pants. The shirt can have the same poof sleeve things as the girls, but I’m not sure that looks good. They have socks and bootish shoe things and whatever underwear thornsiverse boys wear. For this second one it’s more of a kimono type thing, with a belt that snaps or buttons in the front. The girls get a long kimono with a wide belt, and pants underneath it. The kimono is about a little lower than the knee, and the pants go to the ankles. This would have high socks, or whatever socks really, and some shoes. Again, whatever underwear the boys get a kimono shirt thing, with a smaller belt, not as wide as the girls. The pants have pockets for whatever, and it comes with socks and shoes and whatever underwear. Oh and both the boys and the girls uniforms have high collars. For the third one, less high of a collar, and really just a simple dress and apron and for the boys a shirt that matches the girls dress, socks and shoes and underwear, yep. All of them are blue, just ideas. I’m not sure if any of them would work, but i get ideas like this all the time. so yeah

Re: Submit Wiki Contributions - Culture Page
Ylalie, those are really good, but unfortunately it's been established in canon that passives aren't given uniforms specifically to discourage a group mentality or any sense of unity. They mostly get old clothes dyed blue, or things purchased from the human shops in the Stacks. The only thing that's really uniform is the shade of blue. The mismatched clothes on the servants are one of Brunnhold's "quirks".. it seems like one of those funny old traditions to visitors, but it has a practical motive.
Thank you for the design all the same!

Re: Submit Wiki Contributions - Culture Page
Well, I've always thought Thorns could benefit from some good old fashioned Appalachian creepiness, so this is an old murder ballad that's probably sung by the more disgruntled humans. I borrowed pretty heavily from my favorite mountain singer, Dock Boggs for this. I hope it does his stuff justice.
The Old Wolf.
On an old Vienda street, where glass crushes 'neath your feet, lived a landlord with a heart cold as stone.
Had two eyes as blue as ice, all his rooms were over priced, starved his patrons down to just their skin and bone.
One cold winters night, as the moon kept sky alight, three brothers hatched a plan to make you weep. They had starved for to long, desperation made them strong, they decided to put that old wolf asleep.
So they crept out to his room, each of their steps spelling doom, for the landlord who so long had control. With his gun set at half cock, pulled the trigger, set the lock, and that bullet tore out that old golly's soul.
The three brothers hefted hard, threw his body in the yard, as a testament to what they had just done. Then the walked down to the street, crushed his skull under their feet, and as the Seventen came, no one saw them run.
So you go on, aunts and uncles, throw some iron round they wrists, cause the gods of every kingdom knows. That tonight saw the last of a cruel old wolf, and tomorrow we'll have a death of crows.

Re: Submit Wiki Contributions - Culture Page
Y'all are probably getting tired of seeing my posts. I apologize but shall post anyway. I place this one under "Entertainment", and is about wrestling in Anhai, mainly amongst the Roek.
Wrestling amongst the Roek is something that starts early. Children normally wrestle for fun all throughout childhood, and parents like to encourage this sport so the kids grow up strong and don't shy from rough play. As they grow older, if they continue, normally a father or older cousin will start to teach them the basics of wrestling. Take downs, pins, reversals, that sort of thing.
Around the age of fifteen, they're allowed to wrestle in the big Rainy Season tournament. The tournament's a free for all, there are no weight classes, there are no match rounds. The wrestlers pair up and start to fight, though normally the coaches will try to pair up their fighters with corresponding opponents, so that they can hone there skills but not get killed. A match lasts as long as it takes to make one of the wrestlers touch their back to the ground. This can be done anyway that the wrestler can manage. There are a few rules though. No closed fist hitting, no biting, no clawing, no kicking. Slaps are allowed, but they're pretty useless except at redirecting attacks. The match lasts as long as it takes to take down one of the players. If it takes a while, coaches can agree to give the wrestlers a break to get a drink of water and dance some of the pain out. When it's time to start again, the coaches arrange the wrestlers in their former position.
When the first round is done, the next one starts, until it goes down to the last two wrestlers. Because the rounds can drag on as long as need be, endurance and efficiency of movement are just as important as brute strength in Anhai wrestling.
The winner of the final bout is of course given amazing honors and bragging rights, as well as handcrafts from the many families who come. It's normally considered good and proper form for a craftsmen to give something to the winning wrestler, as a way of thanking him for staying strong to defend Anhau.
One of the more interesting aspects of Anhai wrestling is dancing. Supposedly, dancing came from the three great spirits in the forest that taught the first Roeks how to wrestle. The dances are seen as a way of honoring the sport's roots, and has a practical purpose in honing the wrestler's movements. The Eagle dance is the oldest and best known. The hands are raised and the wrestler lightly dances on the balls of his toes. This dance emphasizes the reflexes and quick feet, and is a favorite of many wrestlers. Bear is a dance that's low to the ground, Bear dancers crouch and sweep their feet in wide circles, expressing mastery of the area around them. Bear dancers are not necessarily the strongest, but they are steadfast and do not budge. The Piikii dance is the newest, and is the most acrobatic. Piikii dancing, due to how new it is in comparison to the other dances, has fewer standard moves and is more left up to the dancer's interpretation. It favors crazy jumps and rolls. However, this is important, at no time can a piikii dancer ever let his back touch the ground, it shows they've already defeated themselves. Piikii dancers are known for their erratic movements, and are feared as combatants because no opponent knows what to expect.
Typically, wrestlers wear a tunic and pants cut and bound at the calf, with a wide belt tied by their coaches. Matches always start with the two wrestlers gripping each other's belt with their left hand, and the other hand is on the shoulder. The coaches hold their wrestlers, then let go at the same time. From there, anything goes.

An item of food: the Sweethop - a shishkabob with roasted frog legs, oranges, and vegetables. It's the equivalent of a hot dog - you can get it practically anywhere.

Re: Submit Wiki Contributions - Culture Page
anhau should have body paint. i think... well its aweome. it could be cool to wear all the time, maybe they have special designs for big hunting trips or special holidays... maybe they have certain colors for the different families? i think somewhere i read about some npc of carts that wore paint during times of war? everyone could do that, and not only during wartimes. i just like the idea of body paint, i think it would be good... for.. anything EDIT: hey with all the new wicks arriving, the anhai wicks would see all the tattoos and the piercings, so while the adults probably wouldnt go for it the anhai children might start trying to copy the tattoos with paint?

Re: Submit Wiki Contributions - Culture Page
Aye: I think the latter idea is perfect. Anhai probably wouldn't bother with much decoration initially beyond a few tribal tattoos, and the Roek do wear some body paint while hunting to conceal themselves. But the brightly colored new wicks would definitely have some influence on the culture of Anhau.

Re: Submit Wiki Contributions - Culture Page
Quote: The Hoxian Adhazah
Loosely translated as 'the dance of lovers', the dance is an exposition self-control and self-discipline especially that between to people romantically involved.
Similar somewhat to the tango, the two partners dance in slow, graceful and deliberate steps about each other, the one key difference being that they are not allowed to touch. The dancers are to get as close as possible, but contact of skin to skin is strictly forbidden. Only 'ghost touches' are to be felt, an almost tangible presence of body heat and aura against the skin of the two involved.
When done properly, it is a sensual display of romantic tensions and appeal. Because touching has been forbidden coupled with the close proximity, the temptation to do so becomes almost unbearable to those involved in romantic relationships. It is shown as a weakness of character to do so, however, and greatly frowned upon in Hox society.
