!!!Backstory:

Nikolaas is the son of a galdor father and a human mother whose husband abandoned her just after Nikolaas was born. Distraught and overwhelmed, she left her child with her sister's family and left without telling anyone where she was going. After years passed without hearing from her, it was generally assumed that she was dead. Growing up with his aunt, who had four children of her own to take care of, Nikolaas spent a great deal of time alone. He had no knowledge of the fact that he was a wick, and his aunt and uncle made no effort to enlighten him as to this fact; although they considered wicks to be good entertainment, they didn't want their nephew to adopt nomadic ways or an eclectic lifestyle. In fact, their desire to lead an uncomplicated, trouble-free lifestyle led them to limit their associations to other humans; Nikolaas, who was somewhat antisocial himself, rarely spoke to anyone but his family. However, his uncle, a candlemaker, did instruct the boy in matters of his trade so that one day he could support himself as something other than a mere unskilled laborer.

When he was a young man, in his early teens, something occurred which changed his life forever. It was then that he met Rosalie, whose last name he never learned. She was a nomadic wick only a few years above his own age, and the two met when they collided on a street corner; she was fleeing a shopkeeper who accused her of stealing some insignificant trinket or other. Nikolaas defended her, and in gratitude she offered to teach him a trick or two. He was confused until she assured him that he was also a wick, a fact which ought to have been somewhat obvious, but that had simply never occurred to him; he had always assumed that wicks were limited to the nomadic wanderers who passed through every once in a while. He became an eager pupil, and under her patient instruction, he picked up quite a few spells, as well as a bit of Tek. So infatuated was he with Rosalie, as well as with his newfound link to his true heritage, that he was even toying with the notion of leaving with her and adopting a nomadic lifestyle.

However, this was not to be. A few days before she was set to depart, a human child went missing and accusations of abduction by the wicks began to fly. After a number of minor altercations took place between a group of humans led by the vanished child's parents and the wicks, the situation was taken to be resolved. However, the next morning Rosalie was found brutally murdered, presumably as some sort of backlash. Utterly heartbroken, Nikolaas resolved to forget everything she had taught him in order to distance himself from the pain of losing the only friend he'd ever had. He lived for a while longer with his aunt and uncle, then struck out on his own. He has worked independently as a candlemaker for around fifteen years. However, every time he begins to fear that he's getting too attached to any one location, he'll pick up and move, selling his shop to reestablish himself somewhere completely different. The rest of his life has been spent in a state of quiet detachment, trying to avoid anything that reminds him he's not human. Because of the traumatic memories associated with the discovery of the fact that he's a wick, he tries not to use magic or let on that he understands limited Tek.


!!!Personality:

Although Nikolaas initially gives off an impression of gruff unpleasantness, he is surprisingly patient and good-natured, particularly with children. Unwilling to risk another round of emotional devastation, however, he takes great pains to separate himself from other people, and doesn't seek to form social connections beyond distant acquaintances or customers. Although his outward appearances suggest apathetic calm, he can occasionally be quite neurotic, and doesn't sleep nearly as much as he should. Along with his reclusive tendencies, Nikolaas also makes a point of being politically apathetic.

!!!Physical Description:

Nikolaas actually does look fairly human. Although his skin is olive-toned, he is broad-shouldered and solid-looking, with close-cropped dark brown hair and blue eyes, which are unusual for a wick. He is somewhat on the tall side, standing just under 6'0". His face is open for the most part, although his nose is somewhat pointy, as well as a bit on the long side.

At present, Nikolaas is somewhat adrift in the world. His goal is finding a reason to get out of bed in the morning for the days when the need to eat breakfast just isn't good enough.

Hi Nikolaas! Great character sheet. I was very sad to read about Rosie.

The only thing that needs some tweaking is the reason or circumstances surrounding Rosie's murder. Although wicks are not well liked among the galdori, outright murder of a wick is rare, and a human probably wouldn't kill a wick out of hatred (humans tend to like wicks well enough). The result of a robbery or something else crime-related might make it feel more authentic.

Apart from that, this looks great! A little edit and you'll be ready to go
