'''Name:''' Sophie Linnet
'''Age:''' 29
'''Race:''' wick
'''Place of Origin:''' Anaxas, on the road

!!!Backstory:

Sophie was born into an offshoot of the Laughing Sky tribe to wick parents, Sergon and Emaly Linnet.

Many of the women in her extended family were capable of tarot reading and other future-seeing methods and often did it for each other and for their own entertainment as well as for money. Emaly was among the most ostentatious of readers and from her Sophie learned to read the cards and put on a good show. Emaly often wished for a more children, and Sophie had a number of “almost” siblings both older and younger than she. Emaly only carried Sophie and her older brother, Alko, to term.

Her da was the great learned sage of the family, knowledgeable of some math, magic, and even reading. A game that the two of them played on the road was Sums, in part to teach Sophie and her brother to do quick math in their heads. Sophie is still capable of doing complex arithmetic without writing, with a high degree of accuracy. She never had much interest in advanced magic or reading. Lately, she’s been curious about books, having acquired an almanac and wishes she had paid more attention to her da when she had the chance. Her “magic” is mostly false, basically limited to card tricks and sleight of hand to impress her customers. Alko, on the other hand, was a precocious student who was particularly talented; as children, Sophie often tormented him with pranks to bring him down a notch.

Although she looks and acts like a traditional spoke, Sophie is actually a drifter. She left her tribe for a life with someone of a higher rank that she thought she loved and loved her back; she was later betrayed and abandoned by him. Sophie is deeply ashamed of this mistake. She doesn’t like to dwell on the memory. Sophie never speaks of it and if questioned, answers vaguely or falsely. Sophie avoids her family's caravan and the Laughing Sky tribe.

She does not know if she was exiled properly, but isn’t brave enough to find out, and keeps her origins secret from other wicks, especially. Leaving was her choice to own up to, though she regrets it often. She has strong ties to Old Rose Harbor, which was where she went when she first drifted; it was there that she pulled herself up from poverty. Some people, especially her old employers, in Old Rose still recognize her, though she had black hair then.

She earned the money for her own cart and kenser through grueling saving, terrible risk-taking and constant work. In that time Sophie worked not only as a fortune-teller, but as a waitress, shopgirl, maid-of-all-work, errand-girl, mender and seamstress, taking whatever work came her way. Sophie now lives comfortably on her own means, telling fortunes out of her cart and delivering a few letters that are going her way, but it took years to get where she is now. She sometimes misses her family, especially her parents and brother. She’s been on her own now for a little more than ten years.

!!!Personality:

Sophie is at heart a keen observer of people, and is personable and cheerful. She makes acquaintances quickly. Her intuition about people is usually correct, and Sophie relies on it to help her tell fortunes. Fortune-telling, to Sophie, is glorified advice-giving with a dash of vodundun for sparkle. She believes that, for the most part, people already know the solutions to their problems and only need help to find them, or else they simply like to be entertained. In general, Sophie gives different performances for wicks and humans; a little more advice for the wicks, who expect it, and a little more show for the humans, also expecting it. Sophie has never read a galdor's fortune. She has a good memory for names and faces, and rarely forgets a client while in an area.

Though she can be bothered by certain behaviors, such as pity (especially directed at her) and arrogance, Sophie will suppress her feelings for the sake of peace or survival. If anything becomes unbearable, Sophie will try to leave the situation or divert attention to some other issue; she’s never had any trouble that she could not leave behind the next morning. She prefers to meet many strangers, who rarely stay for long and are varied in personality, and thus enjoys constantly being on the move. For some she appears flighty.

She’s a terrible packrat. Her cart contains her life, as small as it is. It’s especially dear to her because she had to work for everything that’s inside; Sophie, a spoke who lost everything, almost can’t bear to part with a possession if she can help it. Throwing things out is nearly unthinkable to her. She has stood for ages by a dustbin on several occasions, wondering if she should really dump all the potentially useful bits of string. Sophie will reuse tea leaves until there is no flavor left. Empty bottles and tins are always cleaned and new uses invented for them.

Sophie doesn’t usually trust anyone entirely, though she likes to assume the best. She sympathizes with the resistance, and will shelter or feed the people she thinks are freedom fighters; however, she asks few questions and prefers anonymity, for her own safety. Sophie will sometimes carry letters for them for a small fee, especially for those who cannot contact their families safely. She wouldn’t take up arms for the cause, having little contact with the galdori and feeling little of their restraints, though she has little love or loyalty to them. With every move of the High Judge, her sympathy to the resistance grows.

Sophie can lie or trick her way out of most bad situations, and though she was trained to use some weaponry by her brother (who in turn learned it from a Black Hander who married in), she is squeamish and for the most part non-confrontational.

!!!Physical Description:

Sophie has always loved decoration and color, to the point where she could rightfully be described as garish. Years ago, a pirate in Old Rose Harbor persuaded Sophie to put a ring in her nose, which she liked so much she’s been adding on ever since. Her ears are already fringed with brass and silver, and her eyebrows bear rings as well, three on the left and two on the right. She wears a glass jewel brooch and a cheap gold-plated necklace that is chipping a bit.

Sophie continues to dye her black hair totally green and wears it in an elaborate mass of braids swept up in bun on her head and secured by a magenta bow. A thick lock of hair swings free, wrapped tightly with a wide red ribbon. Her almond-shaped eyes are hazel green, and rimmed with black paint. She still wears the nose-ring, even though it brings attention to her large, somewhat beakish nose—she has conditioned herself to see it as a good thing, a memorable and wise feature in her face.

As a child, her mother’s sister, the tattooist of their tribe, tattooed a pattern of golden lilies and swirling designs to her upper arms like sleeves, so that even in hard times she could wear bracelets. Sophie has since added an arc pattern of the moon and stars across her upper back, stars trailing to her waist, and is now considering a new design, though she has made no decisions on what it should be.

In general, Sophie wears skirts, black and white ankle boots with small heels and a bolero jacket with a loose cream-colored blouse under an embroidered bodice. When open for business, she wears a pair of hairsticks with small sun and moon beads dangling from the end, imitating a galdori fashion she once saw in Brunnhold. The fingers of her leather gloves have been cut off at the knuckle, to grip the cards better. Her olive complexion is sprayed with freckles. She is a small, slight witch, strong for her size, but still not that impressive. She openly envies the women with fuller busts.

Her cart is small, but suited to her and brimming with nearly everything she’s ever acquired in the ten years she’s been wandering. It is divided into halves by a curtain, embroidered by Sophie with stars. The half nearest the door in the back is the business half, where she tells fortunes. The half furthest is the half where she sleeps, containing her bunk, lockbox and other private possessions. The curtain is often drawn back when she is not working. The outside is painted with an advertisement of a moon surrounded by a vaguely tribal design. The written parts, to her instructions, read "MADAM SOPHIA!" above the words "THE FUTURE REVEALED!" The door locks with both a dead bolt on the inside and a lock in the door, on either side.

Realistically, Sophie is looking into purchasing a second, larger cart and a few more animals and ferrying people from place to place, to improve her earning power.

She would like to learn how to read and improve her magic skills. She is discreetly looking for a teacher.

She is also seriously considering the idea of having a child, reasoning that her youth is quickly leaving her behind.

She sometimes misses her family, especially her parents and brother. She’s been on her own now for a little more than ten years.

During the rainy season of 2712, she lost her living and her kint to unfortunate circumstance. Sophie picked up what she could, and did what she has done her whole life, which is move on. Hearing a tale about Anhau's rediscovery, Sophie has decided to go there, remembering the stories her da told her as a child.

Recently, Sophie has fallen into a deep, dense depression, from losing her kint. It was as losing an arm to her and she has not fully recovered. Although she is outwardly much the same, Sophie has started to think more about what she has done with herself--it doesn't make her very happy.

Since Loshis 2712, Sophie has lost much of the flash and sparkle of her unusual appearance. She maintains the piercings and of course the tattoos, but has since worn more muted colors and practical things--very much like an Anhai witch. Although her hair is still mostly green, about two inches of her natural black hair shows at the roots.
