 Oaria Oloi
'''Name:''' Oaria Oloi
'''Age:''' 20
'''Race:''' Passive
'''Place of Origin:''' Vienda, Anaxas
'''Occupation:''' Laundry Seamstress

!!!Backstory

When the Oloi family came to Anaxas, they were the pride of Vienda. The exotic couple (Hessean socialite Narai and Mugrobi explorer/author Dirim) were quickly admitted into high social circles for their trendsetting ways and fascinating and lively discourse. Their three children (Oman, Oliri, and Oaria) were well-behaved and fit well with the other smart and natty galdori children. The older two were sent to Brunnhold each as their time came and quickly sent news back home of their achievements and successes, as every student was wont to do.

When it came time for Oaria to attend the school, she could hardly believe it. It was finally her turn to do her parents proud and to stand in the spotlight. She entered the testing chamber… and failed. She had no ability whatsoever. She was a passive. A scrap. She was crestfallen. Instead of the spotlight, she was shoved into dark quarters and put to work. Her parents fell out of their social circles for fear they would be condemned for producing such a child. For years she retreated into herself, speaking little and socializing with practically no one.

Until she caught Gordon’s eye. He worked in the laundry alongside her. He began to flirt and utter pretty words, slowly drawing her out of her shell. She was still timid and introverted, but she no longer withdrew from conversation. After a stolen night in the gardens with him at sixteen, she found herself with child.

Oaria was terrified. She didn’t know what to do or to whom she could turn. When finally she told Gordon, he immediately proposed action. He laid a plot for them to escape. All she had to do was meet him at the right time and place and they would flee together. When the night came, she went to the place… and stayed there. Her terror over what she carried within her could not overcome the terror of what might lie outside the sheltering walls of the University. She backed out, and so Gordon fled without her.

When the time for her to give birth came, she was aided by a matron in the darkness of her closet of a room. In the distress of the event, her diablerie went off for the first time. Invisibility was cast, and the matron couldn’t see her to staunch the bleeding. She was near death when the diablerie dissipated, and she spent days bedridden. Her child had been taken away in her first unconscious hours, apparently taken to live with relatives in distant Hesse or Mugroba. She knew her parents, ashamed as they were of her, would never take her child. She hoped the distance of relation and nation would be enough for them to accept a passive-birthed child without fear of social embarrassment.

She could never work up the courage to ask anyone where the child had been taken… or even whether it was a boy or girl.

In the four years since, she has simply lived day by day, too timid to do more. Now in her 20th year, she feels deeply about the fact that this would be her year of graduation… her year to become free of the school. Her year to go into the world as a conqueror, the pride of her family. She’s certain that they never think of her except in shame. And so she feels ashamed as well.

But in this shame, there is a determination. She has resolved to make something better of herself-- something she can be proud of. She is determined to become a braver person, even if it takes baby steps.

!!!Personality

Oaria is extremely timid, balking at conflict and shying away from the unexpected. She considers herself a coward for not leaving when she had the chance and yearns to be like the heroines in the secreted-away books kept by her fellow passives (she has none of her own, too timid to ask how to acquire one).

She mothers the young passives, taking it as the only motherhood she may have. Though she yearns for her child, she could never search for it; she is uncertain whether this is because she lacks the courage to do so or because she knows it must have a better life without its scrap of a mother.

In the smallest of attempts to become more courageous, she has begun stealing pieces of fabric from repaired and redesigned garments for her own. Despite the terror she feels at getting caught each time she does so, she has realized it gives her the smallest of thrills to conquer a fear.

!!!Physical Description

Her unusual parentage makes Oaria unusual-looking. For the most part, she looks like an exceptionally dark Hessean, but looking closer she has several Mugrobi features. Though her eyes appear decidedly cross-eyed (whether from her Hessean mother or from sewing at close distances in the dark) they are the same blue as her father’s. Her pale wooly hair is kept tidy under a pale blue scarf. Her Mugrobi-dark skin and broad nose are clear of Hessean freckles.

She is relatively short, and what many would call “average” and the unkind would call “dumpy.” She never shed the weight gained during her pregnancy. Despite her motherly shape, she has quick and slender hands from her work as a seamstress in the laundry, and they are kept clean by multiple baths of lye and soap every day.

!!!Diablerie
Invisibility

!!!Inventory
Sewing basket (usually with several passive uniforms for mending)
Several blue outfits
Pieces of other garments stolen for her own

!!!Skills
Knowledge of fabrics and stitches
Knowledge of soaps and dyes
Quick hands and deft fingers

!!!Goals
To become more brave.
To make friends—she hasn’t had what you would call a “friend” since Gordon.
To make a garment that a human would wear (one that she could never wear as a passive… but it might mean one small step toward fleeing the grounds).
If she becomes free, to have the family that was denied her.
